Susie Sells... Newcastle
Last night, C really needed an escape from her job at the animal shelter. They had to pull her favorite pitbull from the adoptables to euthanize her. She is the most charming pitbull and sweet and loving in so many ways. But she growls the first time she meets anyone. The second time she meets you, however, she is as charming as can be. But her growling was scaring people, including the volunteers.
C is just in love with this dog, though. So she was incredibly heart-broken. She took the dog out for one final play before her time was up. Fortunately, C isn't the one to do the euthanizing. I don't know how she would handle that.
So... as a distraction, I suggested we pick up mushroom seitan cheesesteaks from Jay's Cheesesteak and head out to the beach to eat them. Jay's seitan cheesesteaks are seriously the bomb. There is nothing like them anywhere. At C's request, we also picked up a six-pack on the way to the beach.
We watched the sunset through sea grass (try saying that ten times as fast as you can - well, okay, it ain't no "susie sells sea shells, but whatever).
Of course, we brought C-dog with us. The three of us were all so cold, we huddled together in a shallow recess in a sand dune. You have probably heard the saying:
"The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco." - Author unknown
Well, yesterday was definitely one of those days. But the seitan, the seagrass, and the sunset helped to heal C's broken heart. Well, and I'm sure the Newcastle didn't hurt any either. ;-)

Here's a little cheese steak story for you. I went to an Italian take out place by my apartment and ordered cheese sticks to go. The man who took my order is not a native English speaker. When I got home, I opened the take out bag and found a cheese steak. Not a great find for a vegetarian :)
I love the beach when it's cold. C's job is fascinating to hear about.

you are so sweet for taking her to the beach! i've been in the grassy dunes before in san francisco, it's so beautiful. :)
Lorena - LOL. No, we were too cold to get our hands in the wet sand.
Garrison - Today is a little warmer, thankfully. Maybe this weather will move inland, too. ;-)
Jenny - Oh no! Not the kind of cheesesteak I'd want either!
Mitzzee - Ahhh, yes, unfortunately I didn't partake of the New Castle, being the super-responsible designated driver and all-time cheapest date ever. ;-)
Tesco - Well, this ain't just your average cheesesteak. This is cheesesteak, California-style - aka without the meat. Instead of beef, it is made with seitan, which is a wheat-gluten product. But let me tell you, even as a life-long meat lover (until marrying C), Jay's seitan cheesesteaks are a delight I'd die for! ;-)
Dee - Thank you so much for the hugs. They are always much needed. :-)
Debra - Yeah, I thought about throwing in a line about how tasty the cheesesteaks are with their melted cheese and carmelized onion and that tangy marinade on the seitan, but I didn't want to torture you too much. ;-)
Stella - Oh, how fun that you've been to the dunes - and to San Francisco! It is beautiful, indeed.

a few weeks ago I made burgers for the first time in my life. i HAD been a vegitarian for the past 15 years and recently started eating chicken in pretty small amounts. when the time came to make these burgers for a party of 30 people I put my hands in the middle of the beef and massaged a lot of love into it. Sometimes, even though it is much harder, it is better to have someone loving and compassionate be doing the hard shit... they can give comfort and respect to the life they touching.
