Pit Bull Mauling in SF

So you probably already heard about the pit bull mauling that happened in San Francisco about a week ago. The aftermath has been harder and harder on my beloved C. She works at an animal shelter in the Bay area, thus she works with lots of pits. Since this incident, she has seen a large number of people dropping off their misbehaving pit bull pets to the shelter. This is good, on the one hand. If they are likely to be as unstable as Rex and Ella, that is. But some of these are sweet animals who people are dropping off. Because of the stricter guidelines for pits at the shelters that have been put into place since the mauling, all of these dogs are being put down. C assesses the dogs' behavior to see if they may be good pets, so she interacts with each of these dogs before they are inevitably put down. I wish these people would take their misbehaving pit bulls to the vet to be put down rather than send my darling C home from work in tears every day.

The issue is really about bad breeding practices and the need for pets to be spayed or neutered. So please... spay or neuter your pets!

Comments:
wow that's sad. this reminds me of "amorres perros" that film is great but it was hard to watch the dog fights in it. it was too voilent. i can't imagine how C must feel. hope things get better :)

I very much got into the book by Aphrodite Jones about the lesbian woman who was mauled by dogs. The book: Red Zone.

oh man. fear makes us do things we wouldn't normally do. i hope c is feeling better.

violence sickens me!

Lorena - Yeah, Amores Perros was a very disturbing film.

Jenny - Mari and a writer friend are publishing a comic book about that mauling. Maybe you'll like that, too. I haven't read Aphrodite Jones' book. I'm not sure I will. I find her books quite disturbing. :-0

Transience - Thanks for your well-wishes. :-)

mt1979 - Oh, yeah. I definitely feel bad for that boy. Now the mother? I think more, "What the fuck?"

Jax - All pit bulls are not killing machines. But I think breeding specific breeds of dogs is generally a bad thing. We have a mutt and she is charming as can be. But everyone always asks, "What breed is she?" Why does it matter? She's a great dog. Why are people so breed-obsesssed?

Gulnaz - I'll "ditto" that sentiment!
