Motorcycle Mama

A is having this great debate over whether to buy a motorcycle or a scooter. Initially I voted in favor of a motorcycle. But now that I think about it, despite how butch she is, A is more of a scooter kind of gal.

I used to have the coolest motorcycle ever - a 1973 Honda CB 350. A small bike was perfect for riding around Washington DC, where I lived at the time. Though when I wanted it to, that bike could take me as far as the Chesapeake to where my family lived. My bike was orange (my absolute favorite color) and had a charming speed stripe down the side of the gas tank.

I learned how to ride on that bike. It was my baby. Unfortunately, you have to move your vehicle every 72 hours in DC. I'd blow off moving my bike on snowy days and would just hope for the best. The third time they wrapped a chain around my bike and picked it up off the ground, carrying it to the impoundment lot, I'd had enough. Prepping my bike to ride it out of the impoundment lot - repairing the fender they'd bent and oiling the chain - with the freezing wind stiffening my fingers was not my idea of a fun time.

I didn't ask my parents to store my bike in their garage, not liking to be indebted to them for anything. But I do miss the bike now and then.

A laughs when I ask if she'll let me ride her motorcycle or scooter. Okay, I've had my share of car accidents, but I've always been super-careful when on two wheels. Perhaps I can convince A to at least give me a ride on her backseat.

So, what do you think - should she get a motorcycle or scooter?

Comments:
I'm a Vespa kind of gal, but it would depend on how far A needs to drive it I guess.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

(sort of an aside - I used to be on Bust's network, but was inexplicably dropped. You ever have this happen?)

sorry i don't know much about either but i do agree with mari, two-wheeled vehicles are more dangerous.

You looked so cool on your motorcycle!!!

they're both pretty sexy either way, but skateboards are still my favorite.

Pink Lemonade - I've never heard of that happening. I've had problems with Blog Explosion - they kicked me off for being "too explicit." Whatever.

Mari & Gulnaz - Your concerns are so kind and so well put. Though I'd argue that we only live once, right? ;-)

JennyNYC - You're so sweet! Thank you. Guess I'm not nearly as cool without it, huh? C would agree with you. She said she married me under false pretenses, because as soon as we got hitched, I got rid of the motorcycle and stopped wearing leather. ;-)

Stella - Ah, a gal after my own heart!

ohmigod. motorcycles. my heart just slid down to my toes. you rock.

i would go with scooter since you mentioned that might suit her best. i was just mentioning to my friend how i would love to get a ride in a motorcycle. does it feel close to flying? lucky you.

I'd opt for something that could hack it on an interstate with two on board,personally...

Zoom zoom. Go all out or nothing at all.

I am a scooter gal myself, looking like an alien with an oversized head, putting down the road with daiseys in my front basket. Of course I burned the living daylights out of my leg on the muffler. As far as safety.. my motto is "its better then getting hit by a bus in Pittsburgh". If you are going to go,your going to go, might as well look and feel damn good about the risks you are taking along the way.
