Trichotillomania

Okay, Trichotillomania is a serious disorder where people actually pull their hair out of their head. So the title to this post is not exactly fitting.

I was really surprised when I first heard of compulsive hair pulling. But then I realized, that every night, as I fall asleep, I have a habit of gently pulling on the hair on my head. I don't actually pull or pluck any of the hairs out, mind you. But I do get a deep sense of satisfaction and relaxation from the sensation of a fistfull of hair in my hand. Something about feeling more grounded, maybe - like my hand is holding my head on the earth, keeping me from flying off into a fantasy world. Okay, this is weird, right?

Comments:
I do that too. As a therapist, we call that "self-soothing" so of course it's a good thing!

How sweet - "self soothing." I like that. I feel so much better now (and less like a freak). And so glad to know I'm not the only one! ;-)
