Callou
Callou Designs is this cute little clothing shop that opened up several months ago near where I live. The store is run by Maria de Fatima Callou, whose gorgeous looks and friendly demeanor remind me, unfortunately, of the movie Malena. That movie was horribly depressing, but told the story of a beautiful woman whom all the men in town drooled over and all of the women found threatening.
As a woman who loves women, I would not say that I find her good looks threatening, yet it still took me months of gazing longingly at the clothing in her windows before I finally stepped foot into her shop. In the past week, I've now been in twice. Both times, coveting the shirt and then the poncho in her window, my desperation to own the clothes was enough for me to overcome any inhibitions.
Here is a hint of the gorgeous poncho I bought from Callou. [And don't tell me it's too Fleetwood Mac, ok? ;-)]

Almost every time I walk by her shop, I see men lingering in the doorway. She also does alterations, so if you live in San Francisco and your husband or boyfriend suddenly volunteers to drop off your dress to have the hem fixed, getting a minute to chat with the beautiful Maria may be why!
It's not just her sexy Brazilian accent that is luring them in, she is undoubtedly a hottie. And her sex-appeal definitely shows up in the clothing she designs - though the two pieces I've bought from her have both been the least revealing of the items she has for sale.
I'm pretty sure that is her pictured on the right.

Anyway... cutie-patootie or not... I am quite fond of the unique style of the clothing she designs. Her website doesn't have half of her work displayed nor sadly any of my favorites. But regardless, Maria Callou is clearly very gifted with fabric and thread. I always have a lot of respect for people who are creative and brave enough to go forth with making their dreams come true.
I'm glad that Ms. Callou has made her home in my hood. Her clothing and her bright smile sure liven up the place.
