Movie Musings: Secretary

James Spader, most recently recalled into my memory as a lawyer on the television series The Practice, has never struck me as attractive. I don't know if it's his appearance, the sound of his voice or simply the characters he's played that has left me cold. I only vaguely recall the premise behind one of the movies in which he starred, Sex Lies and Videotape. But tonight, I caught a glimpse of an entirely different side of him.

One of C's co-workers sent her home with a VHS copy of the 2002 film "Secretary." I thought the name of the movie sounded familiar, but couldn't recall its premise. And I'm glad I couldn't remember, as this made the film chalk full of splendid surprises.

Now that I've seen the film, I've since looked it up via Netflix. "Recently released from a mental hospital after treatment for self-mutilating tendencies, a young woman (Maggie Gyllenhaal) gets a job as a secretary for a successful attorney (James Spader) with a tendency toward angry disapproval. The mix of self-loathing (her) and egomania (him) leads them into a unique[ly charged] relationship..." Netflix

I liked one Netflix reviewers line, "This movie could definitely change your view regarding relationships, and perhaps even slide your kink-meter to the left a bit."

The actors did an amazing job of creating and sustaining a powerful level of sexual tension throughout the film. And I hear the coyishly sexy Maggie Gyllenhaaal got a well-deserved Golden Globe award for her outstanding performance in this flick. Though admittedly, the movie ended as pattly as the 1986 film Mr. Spader starred in, Pretty in Pink. Yet I'd still watch this one again - even suffer through the old staticy VHS version another time. BTW - Did VHS tapes show static before we had DVD?

Comments:
Well, I loved the movie Secretary and got some major action both times I saw it on the big screen (with different people no less....oh my!). I thought it captured submission in an intense yet playful way!

I hate watching movies at home, but I am so gonna rent this now.
