B I G Paintings According to Fucko

A couple of nights ago I went with Mari to an art opening for a friend of hers, Andee Maluche. Andee's photos were definitely thought-provoking, especially the ones of the head hunters in the Philippines. There was another artist whose paintings were displayed among Andee's photographs.

The most entertaining component of the evening for me, however, was when Mari and I were chatting with Fucko, an artist and art teacher whom Mari knows from Tribe. (Since meeting so many interesting folk at this party who are part of Tribe, I decided to join as well. Check it out).

Fucko: Mari, I think you need to start working with bigger canvases.

Mari: Hmmm... I don't know.

Fucko: A lot of artists think if they paint crap and it's small then at least it's a small piece of crap. You need to have confidence to spend a month working on a piece and then stand back and smile and say, "Wow. That's a piece of crap. Now what the hell am I going to do with this big piece of crap?"

Mari: I think my issue is more that the big pieces won't fit in my car so I'll never show them.

I think the "piece o' crap" part was more amusing to me, as I can relate more easily to creating crap than the esteemed Mari. (Again, check out her artwork, she's fabulous).

I actually learned some good info from Fucko in amongst the laughs. Like "Varnishing paintings is bad. Varnishing furniture is good. But again - varnishing paintings is bad." I know a number of artists who varnish their paintings. In theory, you'd think it was a good idea - the varnish is going to protect the paint underneath, right? Well, according to Fucko, the varnish must be kept out of the sun or it will crack. And that doesn't sound too purty, does it?

Before the show, I had a blast creating in Mari's studio. She is truly an inspiration. She had lots of meaningful suggestions. I finished the logo for this blog and hope to get a photo of it so I can post it on here. This new piece I'm working on is still in progress. I'm very excited about it, but want to keep my mouth shut in case it doesn't turn out as cool as I'm imagining it will be in my head. But after Fucko's free art lessons, I'm wondering if I should have made it B I G.

Comments:
Most interesting and thought provoking post. Hmm, never knew you shouldn't varnish a painting. And I, along with Carrie, am curious about Fucko and is that his real name?!?
:-)

PS thanks for visting my blog, btw.

Seriously - I was introduced to this guy as Fucko. I didn't make it up, honestly! I'm guessing that is a name he uses on Tribe.net. Ooooh, now don't give away anything from Six Feet Under. I don't have cable and thus am still waiting for the most recent season to come out on DVD. ;-)

While at that anarchist book store (on Haight?!?) I was approached by a worker who told me I could not sit on the floor (I was in a corner looking at a book on homeschooling). When he told me to get up, I didn't move (at first, anyway), and asked, if the store was rather empty and it was anarchist why I had to follow this rule. He said that if we were going to talk about it, we should introduce ourselves properly, and I responded by saying in a dead pan tone, "My name is Fuck." It was very satisfying to say that! In our discussion, he continued to refer to me as Fuck, with no reaction to it himself. It's always exciting to go by another name (especially Fuck!), however shortlived!

lol, nice, I'm gonna start introducing myself by my REAL name, see what reactions I get.

This post made me realise that I am in need of glasses...
I kept reading VARNISHING as VANISHING..
I was all "vanishing anything is bad!" Gavem'self a headache.
le sigh.
