Movie Musings: Kill Bill Vol. 1
I LOVE girl kick butt films. I try to see them all. But I have to say I was highly disappointed with Kill Bill. Now that Volume 2 is out, I thought I better catch up with the first volume before heading off to the theatre. And I'm glad I did. It will save me the extra $8.50 at the box office.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy watching girls doing impressive karate kicks, boxing, shooting guns, or otherwise demonstrating physical strength and prowess. But I like a little more dialogue and plot between punches.
I will admit, I watched Kill Bill on a new DVD player and it wasn't until midway through the movie that I realized that the subtitles had been turned off on my new electronic. (I thought the lack of subtitles had been planned like they had been in that recent Jesus movie done in Latin). So I missed a large chunk of dialogue that had not been translated for me from Japanese into English. However, even watching the remainder of the film with subtitles intact, the movie failed to impress me.
Rather than hit the popcorn line before Volume Two, I think I'll spend those two hours with my good ol' DVD player and re-watch one of my other girl kick butt favorites (Freeway, Bandits, Martial Angels, Barb Wire, Prisoner Maria, Bound, The Heroic Trio, Butterfly & Sword, Executioners, Charlie's Angels or an old Pam Grier flick).
But I welcome any alternative opinions. Maybe the plot of Kill Bill (or lack thereof) redeems itself in Volume 2?

Comments:
I did that same thing with not realizing I was watching the DVD without the sub-titles, when I was watching Francois Ozon's (one of my fave directors) movie, the Swimming Pool. I didn't figure it out till the end, how annoying! It had just enough English lines not to make me realize that I was missing the french.
